SPOCON & THE FIRST ANNUAL HOODFEST 2008

I have a ton of info, but I wanted you to all mark the dates, get them off, get your plane tickets. Everyone is welcome, all HOOD MEMBERS, BF2 palyers, WOW players, freinds and affiliates! HOOD has been together for almost 15 years, and this is going to be the first time we actually get together and have a function. Spocon is going to be a Science Fiction-Fantasy Convention with ALL forms of gaming and sciece fiction content, including LANNING, Board games and more. Its in the works and is all happening next August. Visit www.spocon.us for the info on that. Rooms will be availble at a discount if you need to a place to stay, or better yet, you are probably more than welcome to stay with one of your local HOOD members.

However, we as HOOD will have our very own specail section dedicated to us. We are going to have a BLAST! I have many many more details to come soon, but for now, block out the dates and make sure you are prepared for this. HOOD members are going to recieve a very specail discount on registration as we are helping sponsor this event.

Was a quick post, theres so much more to tel. Somecallmetim is heading up the LANNING section, and he can fill you in on how thats going to work. There will be an entire building dedicated to LAN gaming, and from what I hear, its the only bulding that will have alcohol in it. Sweet.

Also, this entire event is going to be raising money for books for kids at our own local District 81. There are going to be various fund raisers leading up to the convention. One is a 'Bands for Books' show which has been confirmed for December 1, 2007 at the BLVD.

For those of you that have never been to a Sci-Fi / Fantasy Con, or simply put - a Con, it is rather difficult to describe. The "geek" factor is very, very high.
SpoCon is a "full spectrum" con - Gaming, Literature, Art... you name it. By gaming... we mean gaming - table top, miniature (Warhammer 40K for example), CCGs (collectable card games like Magic), Traditional RPGs, newer RPGs, and there is a good likelyhood that several game companies will be present to show off what they have .

If you are into Sci-Fi / Fantasy art, this is your chance to not only see some great works, but to buy it as well. There will be a variety of works available from prints to original pieces. Most pieces will be part of a "silent" auction where you bid with your badge number. Pieces that get a certain number of bids will go to the live auction on Sunday. Proceeds go to the SpoCon literacy fund - helping the local school district by getting them good Sci-Fi and Fantasy books that will make kids think.

If you are into writing and books, we will have workshops and a chance to meet a number of authors and to get books signed.

There will be combat demonstrations, costuming workshops and panels, panels on various subjects.

Friday and Saturday night, there will be a big "Con Party" - typically at a Con, there are "Room Parties" since the events are held in hotels. A certain block of rooms gets set aside and various groups host parties to promote their Con, event, club, and so on. Well, since we will be on the GU campus, alcohol is allowed in one building, and there will be a big "multi host" party in that space each night.

LAN Gaming is different at Cons that it would be at your typical LAN party. Con members essentially donate the use of their computer for the weekend and anyone that is a Con Member can use that computer. Why? because not everyone has a kick ass gaming rig.. they might own, <gasp> a MAC! And we all know Mac's can't play games... Wink

We are working on some sponsorship so a good portion of the computers will be donated for the event - as things work out that is. I've loaned my rig to InCon (before it folded here in Spokane) and RadCon (in Pasco WA) for a number of years and have not had any issues - the machines are well watched and respected. The LAN gaming will start before the Con officially opens on Friday at noon, and run through Sunday at noon (ish) and is the ONLY programming event that runs non-stop during the Con.

A special event we are planning for most likely Saturday night at midnight is a game of Capture the Flag. Smile

SpokLAN.net will be donating the glow-sticks and markers for the event, and should be a lot of fun. There will be a "trophy" of sorts that will be more bragging rights from year to year. It will either be Sci-Fi fans vs Fantasy fans, or Star Wars vs Star Trek... lol... will be fun either way.

And yes - [HOOD] will have some space set aside for an "official meeting" and a chance for everyone to meet and hang out. And yes, enjoy the Con as well.

I feel it is important to get our group of gamers (SKJP and HOOD and others) out there, not only for the gaming purposes, but as an active part of the community. What I have learned from Tim, is that you can do more that just game with a gaming community.
It amazes me the good he does for the community with his monthly Smo-gs, if only enforcing the spirit of brotherhood and fair play. I know many of the younger Spoklan.net kids see Tim as a father figure, and look up to him.

But anyways, I really see an opportunity here to do some good.
Previously I was talking about starting up a gaming community, and currently there is a website: http://www.nwgamingalliance.com/
though there is no content on it yet.
While I do envision what we can do on the site for gaming (it will be the place for our gaming stats, schedules, links to the different clans [[anyone want to help out on the site setup? I am not a dev guy, just a marketing guy, and idea guy]]]), I also see it as an opportunity to use our numbers to do more charitable things.
Personally, it would bring me great pride to see HOOD or SKJP or NWGamingAlliance on the shirts supporting the Susan G. Komen walk. Not only would we be doing charitable work, but we would also be getting our name out there more to the community.

Anyways, I don't mean to hijack this post. I am just trying to say that we can do so much good. SpoCon is good. SMo-gs are good. Why not look for additional avenues? What events (gaming or otherwise) do you feel strongly about?

I'm thinking I might drive down , that way I can bring my rig and both monitors . You mention
sharing the computers , I assume there will be lan rooms but I'm wondering about the safety
of said units. Is it the plan that a persons rig would remain in the room for however long that
person is at the convention?

I'm sure there will be anime rooms, and rooms for other movies as well, but it will most likely not be "questionable" in nature. The gaming usually rolls through the night, as well as, the LAN fun and other games.

The crazy part is the unwashed geeks in costume that come out of the wood work and think you want to hear about their life story and don't understand why your wrinkling your nose and gagging.

"I'm normally David Warner, but today I get to be Andellanth the mage, he's my favorite character.....uh...no..... Why do you think there is a dead dog around here?....."

But other than that, it's all good, sometimes there are even women there. most of them look like shut ins, but there are the occasional geek lovers, and they're fun to watch.

So, what HOOD activities are we gonna run? Any ideas guys?

smear the queer.....I loved that game...I dont think they let kids play that anymore..its not "sensitive" or "fair" I remember many an afternoon playing that game, geting the crap beat out of me by older, faster kids. Can your average geek hold a physical sports-type implement??..that in itself could be funny to watch.
